Buying camera's abroad

The world is our shopping mall: we don't visit the shop around the corner to buy our new camera but scour the internet to find the best deal. We research our new camera over the internet, find the most information on American websites and... wind up buying in China via eBay :-| (it 'd be interesting to see how important eBay has become for the Chinese economy...)

There is still a lot of uncertainty however about being slapped with import taxes, VAT and whatever sneaky tax may be lurking in the dark when you order via the internet or walk through customs with your new camera.
Certain legislation changes every once in a while so it's good to have updated information. This is the latest according to Dutch customs that I just spoke over the telephone:

For camera's, either video or photocamera's and iPads and iPhones:

For business:
Import in the European Union from USA: 0% import tax, 0% VAT
Import within European Union: 0% import tax, 0% VAT when you have a European VAT number.

For both these transactions: you must add 19% on your VAT tax form but you can deduct it on the same form so it's just a formality.

For non-business:
Import in the European Union from USA: 0% import tax, 0% VAT (risk of having to pay 19% VAT over price+shipping/insurance)
Import within European Union: 0% import tax, VAT depends on country of purchase.
