Panasonic GH2 hacked!

It was a matter of time and the time is now: the GH2 has been hacked. Programmer Vitaliy Kiselev has just got to work on the new firmware. Obviously it's still in Beta but he has managed to get these functions -at least partly- working:

• the 30 minute clip length limit being removed (for PAL versions)

• a PAL / NTSC menu function

• new audio bitrates

• AGC selection

• 720/25p, 1080/25p, and 1080/60p (the latter two currently freeze the camera)

Exciting times- this is going to turn a great camera into a killercam! Power to the People! (didn't I use that slogan for a post a few days ago..?)

I was so impressed with the look of this footage I shot a few days ago that I thought it a good idea to compare the different 'looks' or 'presets' available in the Panasonic GH2. (also because I accidentally changed a setting and forgot which one I used!)
I shot this in full HD with the Lumix 20mm 1.7 and fader ND wide open. It's all straight out of the camera but I did lower the brightness by two nudges in FCP on the Nostalgic and Nature shots because they seemed too bright.

The settings for 'my film' are:

Contrast 0
Sharpness -1
Saturation 0
NR 0

Took the Taylor & Hobson (actually: Taylor, Taylor & Hobson) out for a spin yesterday and came back with a lot of under and overexposed pictures. Like all these XS (that is: extra small) buggers it's a tough lens to handle and taking stills with the GH2 is still a bit of trial and error. I don't know if I somehow changed a setting but the LCD screen is pumping from dark to light (in 'M' mode) and I don't know what's causing it.
Anyway, some of the photos have that really sweet swirley bokeh. Love it or hate it...

Mailbox: is there a lens in this envelope?

I bought a 25mm f1.2 CCTV lens for 35 euro's and when I had to sign for an envelope, the last thing I thought was in there was a lens! This thing is so small and yet so light sensitive- how do they do that? It came with an adapter plus an adapter-for-the-adapter?! I tried mounting it with the two adapters but it wouldn't focus. When I just used the big adapter ring, it worked. The focus ring has no stop for infinity so you can just turn it around infinitely(!). On the aperture ring it just says 'open' and 'close' and there is a hard stop on both ends.
Vignetting is obvious when you open the lens up and disappears in crop mode on the GH2. I think for such a toy lens it produces nice images. Here's a few test shots I made. I'll try to post some night shots as well.

Mailbox: budget timer remote for GH2

I don't know why it was relatively hard to find a cheap intervalometer for my GH2. I was searching the forums but noticed people were spending $45 and up for a device that shouldn't cost more than 25,- (which is exactly what I paid for my remote for the Canon 550D) And they seemed to be really happy with that deal..! Was Panasonic stuff more expensive or was it just the GH2 stuff that was more expensive? Because apparently the remote that works on the GH1 doesn't work on the GH2, so I was made to understand.

Mailbox: close, but no cigar

So I got myself a Pentax 6mm f1.2 for 14,99 and I'm dying to mount this thing on my Panasonic GH2. Today I got one step closer but there's about one millimeter between me and happiness. One millimeter of metal.

My C-mount to micro 4/3 adapter arrived and it's another ring like they've been showing up regularly here lately. There is a guy who does reviews of adapter rings but the only thing I can say is that it's black metal and fits my camera. But it doesn't fit my Pentax CCTV lens and that's not the adaper's fault. There is something unusual about the design of this lens and so you must modify it.

Mailbox: an adapter for my Canon FD 50mm!

From somewhere between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, a Russian Israeli by the name of Alexander Shkolnikov sent me a brown envelope containing a black metal ring. Today it dropped on my doormat in Amsterdam, I opened it, photographed it and connected it to my GH2. A small chain of events which, because I chose to write about it, will not go unnoticed. (And that was my contemplation for the day.)

Stop! Adapter madness

A SELECTION OF MY UNUSED ADAPTERS

I have 20+ fixed adapters lying around and none of them output 8.4v. I have one 'universal adapter' that outputs from 1.5v to 12v in steps of 1.5. No 8.4v option. Panasonic charges around 55 euro's for their 8.4v AC adapter. Why 8.4v?
I went to several different electronic stores and they roll their eyes when you say you're looking for an adapter that outputs 8.4v. "No, we don't carry that. It's a very unusual output voltage. Why do you think Panasonic made one different from all the others? So you'd have to buy theirs! Har har har!"

Mijn eerste dag met de Panasonic GH2

Ik heb een fietstocht gemaakt met de hond en m'n  GH2 met de Panasonic 20mm 1.7 meegenomen- voor het eerst dat ik echt even de tijd had om lekker te klooien. Heb wat gebouwen gedraaid en met focus verleggen via de touchscreen gespeeld. De camera en de lens doen het behoorlijk goed. Af en toe zie je dat ie even zoekt naar de focus maar dat valt misschien te verhelpen door het focus-kader (op het schermpje een geel vierkantje) te verkleinen.
Verder zag ik bij de gebouwen toch wel wat digitale bij-effecten: bij een rooster zie je aliasing en onder het dak van het 'ruimteschip' zie je een een 'golf-beweging'. Weet niet hoe dit komt. Zou mijn EX1 dat niet hebben? Of mijn Canon 550D? Misschien dat ik nog een test moet doen met de 3 camera's.

Ik heb het materiaal door Magic Bullet gehaald en de camera trillingen (handheld) eruit gehaald. Aan het eind van het filmpje zie je het materiaal zoals het uit de camera kwam.

Mijn eerste 15 seconden met de Panasonic DMC-GH2

Gisteren, op de dag van aankoop: Ik MOEST iets draaien, al was het maar een paar minuten met het kleine beetje accu-power wat uit de fabriek kwam. Het was al gelijk duidelijk dat sommige shots nooit zonder het uitklapschermpje gemaakt zouden worden: de vloershots en de topshot van de stuiterende basketbal. Wat een feest is dit ding! En het wordt natuurlijk alleen maar leuker; als ik echt weet wat ik aan het doen ben...
De handleiding is een ramp, heb ik begrepen, maar een medegebruiker heeft de belangrijkste zaken voor het video-gedeelte van de camera in een 4 pagina tellend document samengevat. Dat is al een stuk beter dan de 200 pagina's van de complete gebruiksaanwijzing.

Bye Sony Z1, hello Panasonic GH2?

Het ziet ernaar uit dat ik afscheid ga nemen van mijn Sony HVR-Z1U. De overstap naar volledig tapeloos is dan alweer een stuk dichterbij. Ik heb serieus zitten kijken naar de Panasonic AF 101 maar die is boven mijn budget op het moment. Maar Panasonic trekt wel, met die fantastische nieuwe 3/4 microchip. Ik heb veel gelezen over de DMC-GH2 en hem onlangs in mijn handen gehad. Het eerste was meer een genoegen dan het tweede. Waarmee ik bedoel dat de Panasonic functioneert als een pro maar voelt als een stuk speelgoed. Ik heb er heel kort mee gespeeld: de touchscreen focus-feature was wel erg leuk- of het ook zo goed werkt tijdens een echte klus is een tweede.
