From the fall of 2015 into the fall of 2016 I worked on a documentary on poet/writer Remco Campert. The film was selected for the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and has been aired on national television.

My company Imagine Video co-produced it and I did a lot of the 'intimate' camerawork for it. The film was received with great praise by both the press and the public.

It's been almost 6 years since my co-director Mark Limburg and I started filming for the documentary 'I am Innocent' about a young Nigerian man who started boxing to realize drinking water for his village. Now finally the film is being broadcast tomorrow on NPO2 at 11 PM. It 's been a long time coming. Enough talk about the film- hope you get a chance to see it.

Our film is the kick off for a whole week of boxing documentaries, including a film about my (childhood) hero Muhammed Ali.

First documentary shot on GH2 on television

The first documentary shot on a GH2 is broadcast tonight in the Netherlands, on Nederland 2 at eleven pm. The excellent documentary slot Het Uur van de Wolf co-produced the film.
(I believe there are 2 scoops:  the first documentary shot on a GH2 in the Netherlands and the first filmer with the name Wolf making a film for Het Uur van de Wolf (The Hour of the Wolf).)

The film is actually not entirely shot on the Panasonic GH2 because shooting with a consumer camera proved extremely impractical in many instances, especially when doing camera, sound ánd interviews. About one third of the film was shot on the Sony EX1 and 3. 

Het Ritme van Elly de Waard is a film about Holland's first serious pop journalist back in the 70's and 80's who later became a poet and stock broker. Today, at 72, she lives with her wife and their Jack Russel in a beautiful home in the woods on the coast of Noord-Holland. Outspoken and uncomprimising, Elly de Waard has encountered much resistance to her persona and work, but she has stayed true to her beliefs and work, whatever the cost.

I made this film with my 74-year old mother, Deborah Campert, and I wish there had been a Making of... it would have been engaging viewing material..!

A dvd of the film is part of the book Vogelwater, for which my niece Frederique Masselink-van Rijn made the photographs.

Zooming in on a Follow Focus

I've got several nice camera's, a beautiful Gini rig, a Lilliput monitor, a sleek set of lenses... so what's missing? A follow focus system. I love the touchscreen focus feature on my GH2 in combination with the pancake 20mm 1.7 but that's not going to work with my old prime Carl Zeiss and Meijer-Optik lenses.
My lenses have fixed gear rings so I could focus manually, I mean literally, by getting my right hand to the lens but I just don't see that happening smoothly. Try to keep a relatively heavy rig balanced with one arm while turning the focusring... nah, I don't think so. And even the follow focus is not going to solve the problem of having to let go of one handgrip. But it will be easier to access and make fine focusing a breeze.

Filmersblog is going English

To regular visitors it won't come as a big surprise and parts of the content of this blog were already in English, but now it's officially formal, final & approved by the Board of Trustees and the shareholders committee: filmersblog is going English.  It wasn't an easy decision because I started this blog primarily aimed at the Dutch market and I wanted to create a unique place for Dutch video and filmmakers.

But since half of my visitors are from all over the world and the language of filmmakers is a) visual and b) English, there really is no use going on in Dutch. For those who want to continue reading the articles in Dutch -or any language other than English- there is a translation button on the blog. (and if you have questions and/or would like to communicate in Dutch, you can always contact me personally)
The blog remains the same in sharing its passion for solid gear, good deals and videoproduction in general. Bless you.

Power from the USA

Geen haar op mijn hoofd die overwoog om tegen het officiële tarief van 99,- een accu voor de GH2 te kopen. Dat is 1/8 van de aanschafprijs van de camera!? Klonen zijn er niet dus welke mogelijkheden zijn er nog meer om de GH2 te voeden? Je kunt gaan zitten pielen met oplaadbare batterijen in combinatie met de officiële DC Coupler, je kunt met de officiële voedings adapter van Panasonic (60,- euro) uit de voeten, als je tenminste in de buurt van een stopcontact zit.

Get organized: tie it down, hang it up, velcro it.

Ik zag net een foto van ene Toksterjokster die een paar papier-clips (niet te verwarren met paperclips) gebruikt had om netjes kabels aan z'n bureau te bevestigen. Ik ben gek op dit soort vondsten en heb hier ook een spaghetti-brei aan kabels in alle soorten en formaten waar hopen stof zich in verzamelen. Af en toe ga ik die te lijf met een kruimeldief maar het stof ligt op een of andere manier altijd een straatlengte voor.
Ik had net een aanbieding gezien in de Blokker-folder voor kabel klittebandsluitingen. 4 stuks voor 1 euro. Klitteband is een van de beste vondsten van de laatste eeuw en deze dingen leken me nou ideaal als manusje-van-alles. Het eerste wat in me opkwam, was mijn accu vastklitten aan m'n Gini-rig. Maar je kunt natuurlijk alles met die dingen doen. Het zijn kabelbinders maar ze zijn lang genoeg om veel grotere zaken dan kabels aan banden te leggen, zoals de foto laat zien. Ze hebben ook nog een speciaal lusje om ze strak te trekken. Goeie deal. 

En om dit vondsten-feestje compleet te maken, wilde ik ook nog even mijn eigen kabelbevestigings-oplossing delen. Het zijn gereedschaps-bevestigings-systeems (wie een beter woord weet -en dat is er vast- kan contact opnemen met de redactie...) Ik heb deze dingen meegenomen uit mijn opa's nalatenschap (geloof het of niet, een stuk plastic als erfstuk). Maar ik moet wel zeggen, mijn grootvader was superstrak georganiseerd dus het is tekenend hoe deze man in het leven stond. Ze zijn ongetwijfeld voor een paar euro ook nu te koop in bouwmarkten en gereedschapszaken. Dank je wel, opie.

Mijn eerste dag met de Panasonic GH2

Ik heb een fietstocht gemaakt met de hond en m'n  GH2 met de Panasonic 20mm 1.7 meegenomen- voor het eerst dat ik echt even de tijd had om lekker te klooien. Heb wat gebouwen gedraaid en met focus verleggen via de touchscreen gespeeld. De camera en de lens doen het behoorlijk goed. Af en toe zie je dat ie even zoekt naar de focus maar dat valt misschien te verhelpen door het focus-kader (op het schermpje een geel vierkantje) te verkleinen.
Verder zag ik bij de gebouwen toch wel wat digitale bij-effecten: bij een rooster zie je aliasing en onder het dak van het 'ruimteschip' zie je een een 'golf-beweging'. Weet niet hoe dit komt. Zou mijn EX1 dat niet hebben? Of mijn Canon 550D? Misschien dat ik nog een test moet doen met de 3 camera's.

Ik heb het materiaal door Magic Bullet gehaald en de camera trillingen (handheld) eruit gehaald. Aan het eind van het filmpje zie je het materiaal zoals het uit de camera kwam.

Free DSLR moire-filter just released!

Ik had een paar dagen geleden een stukje geschreven over de gratis filters en hoe mensen het leuk vinden om anderen te helpen en hun vondsten te delen, toen ik een stukje las over een wanhopige -Nederlandse- filmer die ten einde raad was omdat zijn klant al het materiaal had afgekeurd dat hij gedraaid had met de Canon 5D Mark II. Reden: moiré. Dit kleine sprookje geeft precies aan waar ik het over had: de essentie van het internet, mensen die kennis delen, elkaar belangeloos helpen.

Ik heb de nieuwe uitvoering van de Konova slider uitgeprobeerd. De nieuwe slider heeft 4 kogellagers tegenover 3 in de vorige uitvoering. Kort samengevat: het verschil in beeldkwaliteit is niet zichtbaar maar ik denk wel dat je een steviger produkt krijgt voor hetzelfde geld. De lagers zijn toch onderhevig aan flink wat slijtage, met name als je zwaardere camera's gebruikt, en dan is zo'n extra kogellager heel erg fijn om te hebben.

Gratis plug-ins voor Final Cut Pro

Wat is er leuker dan gratis spullen te krijgen? Gratis spullen uitdelen! Het is prachtig om te zien dat iets wat jij bedacht en/of ontwikkeld hebt, succes heeft en zich als een lopend vuurtje verspreidt. Het is waarom het internet werkt, voor mij in ieder geval. Het uitwisselen van informatie, het delen van kennis, een vraag die je vaak met enkele klikken van de muis opgelost hebt. Het stemt positief: in wezen vinden mensen het leuk om te delen. (ook al zou je dat niet denken als je de zwartgeblakerde koppen in de kranten ziet of de beelden van terreur van hen die bij het woord 'delen' alles en iedereen om zich heen neer maaien.) Maar laat ik niet moralistisch worden- let's get down to business.

Ik kwam dit onlangs tegen: een collectie van 27 effecten en filters. Onbezoldigd, kosteloos, gratis, voor nop! Doe er je voordeel mee. (en geef ook eens iets terug, als je in de gelegenheid bent)
